Affirmations (meaning a statement said with confidence about a perceived truth) have helped many women make both pregnancy and birth more calm and confident.
An affirmation can work because it has the ability to program your mind into believing the stated concept, this is because the mind doesn’t’ know the difference between what is real or fantasy.
There are both positive and negative types of affirmations. I’m sure many of us can remember as a child being told by a teacher, parent or coach that we didn’t have the ability to do something, or we were too fat, clumsy, etc. These unwholesome statements can stay with us in the conscious or unconscious mind, and we then reinforce them throughout our lives.
Using positive affirmations during pregnancy can help prepare you for labour. As you plant healthy messages into your subconscious mind, you prepare your mind and body for birth, not to mention nurturing your little baby.
Here’s some suggestions of how to use birth affirmations
- Speak the affirmation out loud for a few minutes, three times a day — morning, midday and evening. An ideal time to do this is when you’re getting ready for work. Another option that helps is to write out some affirmations in a notebook or write some of your favourites and put them up around the home.
- Add these to your breath-work to embody the positive quality you seek.
- Get your partner to repeat your affirmation to you. As they are saying for example, “you are strong and capable woman” you identify this statement. If you don’t have someone who you feel comfortable asking then use your reflection in the mirror as the person who is reinforcing the healthy message.
- Listen daily to recorded affirmations you can even play them whilst you sleep to go deep into your subconscious mind (you don’t need to actively hear them for this to work eg. you can put a track on repeat and leave the player by your bedside)
Affirmations can be a powerful tool to help you to change your mood, state of mind and manifest the calm and confident birth you desire – however baby shows up.
