HypnoBirthing FAQs

"A stress free, empowering birth, without fear and tension"

What is Hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing enables you to work with your body to release fear and negativity, so you can come in to a space that is calm, peaceful and confident.

Hypnobirthing is made up from a lot of simple things which, overall with practice, make a very big difference. It uses the power of words and language to work positively with the unconscious mind to let go of fear, re-programme and free your intuitive mind, so that you can feel more confident and powerful in your body.

When you are able to tap in to your instincts without fear or distrust, you will have a more comfortable, calm, empowered labour and birth and feel more in control of the process.

Does Hypnobirthing mean I will experience a pain-free labour?

As you and your body are so unique, so too will be your labour; I cannot guarantee all women will have a pain-free experience but it will make a very big difference. Some women say they had no pain at all and some say it was less painful than they had anticipated, or experienced before. As Hypnobirthing enables a natural birth you will be less likely to experience any tears and you will recover more quickly.

What are the benefits of Hypnobirthing for my baby?

As you feel more relaxed and calm during your pregnancy, your baby should benefit from all those feel good hormones “endorphins” being released, helping him or her to feel secure and comforted within the womb. When your baby is born, with Hypnobirthing, he or she should not be traumatised from a difficult delivery and should sleep better, feed better, develop and thrive more quickly, be content and happy and develop positive and secure relationships.

How does Hypnobirthing help the father?

Hypnobirthing enables the father to establish an important role in his partner’s pregnancy and birth and to become her support during this process. You will encouraged to read the relaxation scripts together and he will learn how to gently massage you and then, during your labour, to become your protector and advocate. He will learn how to ask the right questions of the medical professionals and help make informed decisions, so that the birthing experience is the best it can possibly be. The whole process can be very bonding between partners and between father and baby.

What’s covered in the Hypnobirthing Course?

The course covers the following;

  • What happens in labour and birth and how fear can affect the natural process
  • You learn self hypnosis to achieve deep relaxation
  • Practice visualisation techniques to aid labour and birth
  • Breathing techniques to help relax you, work with surges (contractions) and to birth your baby
  • Massage techniques to create endorphins – your body’s own natural painkillers
  • Natural ways to bring your body into labour if you go over your “due date”
  • How to prepare for birth physically
  • Birthing positions
  • Partners are shown how to be involved and how to look after you in labour
  • How to prepare your birth plan

Does Hypnobirthing work if I need an intervention, an induction or Caesarean?

Hypnobirthing makes a difference whether you have a natural home birth or one in hospital where it may have not gone quite how you would have liked. So long as you have done the practice, then you will feel calm, relaxed and more confident than you would have experienced otherwise.

Who is this HypnoBirthing course suitable for?

This hypnoBirthing course is suitable for first time mums and mums who’ve had kids before.

HypnoBirthing helps women who are scared of birth because they’ve never done it before, who are anxious because of a bad experience last time, or who just want a calmer, easier, more natural birth experience.

If you’re pregnant, and looking for an alternative to the over-medicalised, pain-is-inevitable mindset, then hypnoBirthing is for you.

Will Hypnobirthing work for me?

There’s no great secret to Hypnobirthing, it’s just practice, practice, practice! A very simple equation, the more you practice the more it works but even if you don’t have time to do as much as you hoped to do, all your training and relaxation will help you to feel calm, relaxed and you will trust that your body knows exactly how to give birth.

When Can I start Hypnobirthing?

There are no time limits on Hypnobirthing; you can start as early as you are able or leave it as late as you like, it will work just the same. In general, most couples start 3-4 months before the birth, leaving plenty of time for practice.

What is Hypnosis like?

Whilst in hypnosis, you are very focused, in full control and entirely aware of the whole process, just as you should be. You are not asleep and will not miss out on the birth of your baby. Hypnosis causes a deeper connection, and direct communication between your body and mind. You are in harmony with and completely in control of your body. Through hypnosis, your mind and body are completely in control, very relaxed and open. Women using hypnosis during childbirth frequently speak of a deep connection with their baby a wonderful communication between body and mind leading to a shorter, easier birth.

Will I be ‘out of it’ if I use Hypnosis?

No, absolutely not. With HypnoBirthing (in fact, virtually all hypnosis), you are aware of what is going on around you but you can just ‘tune out’ the distractions.

Is there a HypnoBirthing home-study course, or CDs, tapes and/or videos I could buy?

No. There are no authorised HypnoBirthing home-study courses.

Although hypnobirthing books and CD’s are available they are designed to be used as part of a practitioner-led course. HypnoBirthing is only taught through a series of classes.

When can I start?

Somewhere between 25-30 weeks is ideal, as the success of the course is strongly linked to how much practice you do. However, provided you can finish the course before you give birth, it’s still going to help.

What if my partner/husband can’t attend?

Birthing companions are a very important part of HypnoBirthing success.

However, if your partner/husband cannot attend all of the sessions and/or help you practice or attend the birth, your mother, sister or friend can also be your birthing companion.

Whoever you choose (strongly recommend it’s the father if at all possible, as it helps build a strong relationship with the child), they must attend all the sessions.

When and where does this HypnoBirthing course run?

Group courses are held in Purley.
